HASTELLOY C-276 alloy

HASTELLOY C-276 alloy is a Ni-Cr-Mo-W alloy that is widely regarded as a highly versatile corrosion resistant alloy. Alloy C-276 has very good resistance to pitting, crevice and stress corrosion cracking at high and low temperatures in both oxidizing and reducing environments. This alloy is highly resistant to many aggressive media such as hot contaminated mineral acids and media containing ferric and cuprochlorides.

The C276 alloy summarized (UNS N10276)

  • Nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy
  • The first machined alloy in this composition
  • Track record of 50 years with proven performance
  • Easy to weld
  • Good corrosion resistance in chloride-bearing solutions
  • Available in different shapes
  • Used in reactors and heat exchangers

Corrosion resistance

The C276 Hastelloy alloy is one of the most corrosion-resistant alloys available. Its high chromium-molybdenum content makes it resistant to oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids. As one of the few alloys resistant to chloride glass, chlorine bleach lye and chlorine dioxide solutions. In addition to good corrosion resistance, the C276 has good resistance to stress and crevice corrosion. The C276 is widely used in chemical, petrochemical and organic chloride processes. Other industrial applications of this alloy include:

  • Pulp and paper digesters and bleaches
  • Scrubbers
  • Flue gas desulphurization piping
  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • Food industry

Product description Hastelloy C-276 alloy

In the chemical industry Alloy C-276 is widely used e.g. in heat exchangers, valves, cladding of pipelines and mixers in hot contaminated organic or inorganic environments. Usually no heat treatment is required after welding. However, compared to HASTELLOY C-22® alloy (see page 1.5), Alloy C-276 is less thermally stable, which can lead to detrimental grain boundary exudations under severe thermal loads. In environments where selective weld deterioration is observed, Alloy C-276 should be welded with Alloy C-22 filler metal. Alloy C-276 is both cold- and hot-deformable. The deformation temperature in hot forming is between 950 and 1230°C. Common forming techniques can be applied.
